The Nigeria Police Force has sent out a security alert after intelligence reports suggested that terrorists intend to target schools, churches, and NYSC orientation camps. The advisory was sent to State Commissioners and was shared internally before being leaked to the general public.
Police were instructed to step up security at soft targets and to collaborate with Vigilante groups in areas where police presence might be limited.
Security Measures Increased
In Osun State, mosque and church administrators have reportedly increased screening of congregation members and discouraged large gatherings following a similar advisory from the DSS.
Parents have further begun sending their children to and from schools on different routes in some northern and middle belt states. NYSC authorities have further privately reviewed security measures at NYSC orientation camps for the current and incoming batch of youths in camp.
The advisory did not, however, name specific locations, citing national security reasons. Some social media users argued that the security alert did not justify panic, while police further urged Nigerians to report suspicious activities around schools, churches, and NYSC camps without spreading rumours.
The alert further comes as police step up security in line with a heightened alert that has been in place since mid-2026.
For Nigerians, the main message remains vigilance without unnecessary panic, particularly around public places identified as potential soft targets.
