Kano Assembly Demands Urgent Action as Diphtheria Outbreak Reportedly Kills Over 50 Children

The Kano State House of Assembly has raised the alarm over a diphtheria outbreak in Rano Local Government Area, with lawmakers reporting that more than 50 children have died from the disease.

The situation was brought before the House during plenary by the lawmaker representing Rano Constituency, Ibrahim Malami, who called for immediate government intervention to prevent further loss of lives.

Rano Communities Hit by Deadly Diphtheria Outbreak

Malami said the outbreak has particularly affected Rurum A, Rurum B and Sabuwar Kaura communities in Rurum Ward, where the reported deaths have occurred.

He told lawmakers that the scale of the outbreak required an urgent response from the Kano State Government and health authorities, particularly as diphtheria can spread quickly among vulnerable populations.

The lawmaker also disclosed that the medical department of Rano Local Government had already begun emergency measures to respond to the outbreak. His office, he added, had provided medical drugs to support the initial response.

The Assembly backed the call for stronger intervention, with lawmakers stressing the need to prevent the outbreak from claiming more lives.

Lawmakers Seek Wider Emergency Response

The concern has also extended beyond Rano, with lawmakers calling for stronger surveillance, vaccination and medical intervention in communities considered at risk.

The Assembly’s intervention comes as concern grows over the reported spread of diphtheria and the vulnerability of children who may not have adequate protection against the disease.

Lawmakers urged health authorities to intensify preventive measures and ensure affected communities receive the medical attention and emergency support needed to bring the situation under control.

The reported death toll was presented during the Assembly proceedings and remains subject to further assessment by health authorities.

Kano Assembly Confirms New Takai LGA Secretary

In a separate development during the same plenary, the Kano State House of Assembly approved and confirmed Salihi Adamu as the new Secretary of Takai Local Government Area.

The confirmation followed the presentation of a report by the House Committee on Local Government, chaired by Aliyu Muhammad.

The committee recommended Adamu after considering his eligibility and capacity to carry out the responsibilities of the position.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Jibril Ismail Falgore, subsequently announced the confirmation during Tuesday’s plenary.

The appointment came as the House continued its legislative activities alongside its call for urgent action over the reported health crisis in Rano.
