Claudia Winkleman Ends BBC Chat Show After Just One Season

Claudia Winkleman has confirmed she is stepping away from her BBC chat show after only one season, saying she was “too nervous to enjoy it” despite the programme attracting millions of viewers.
The presenter, who remains one of the BBC’s biggest television personalities through The Traitors and other projects, announced that she would not return for another season of The Claudia Winkleman Show, which debuted earlier this year.
Her decision brings an early end to the Friday night chat show after a seven-episode run that featured a lineup of major stars from the worlds of film, television and music.
Claudia Winkleman Says the Show Wasn’t the Right Fit
In a statement, Winkleman thanked the BBC for giving her the opportunity to host the programme but admitted she did not enjoy the experience as much as she had hoped.
She explained that taking on the chat show made her realize she was simply too nervous throughout the production.
While she did not completely rule out returning to the format someday, Winkleman said she is happy focusing on the television projects she already hosts.
She said she already has some of the best jobs in television and wants to continue dedicating her time to those programmes.
Star-Studded Guest Lineup Throughout the Season
Although the series lasted only one season, it welcomed an impressive collection of celebrity guests.
Among those who appeared on the programme were:
| Celebrity Guests | Profession |
|---|---|
| Lisa Kudrow | Actress |
| Jeff Goldblum | Actor |
| Niall Horan | Singer |
| Rachel Zegler | Actress |
| Ralph Fiennes | Actor |
| James McAvoy | Actor |
| Jamie Dornan | Actor |
| Vanessa Williams | Actress & Singer |
| Josh Widdicombe | Comedian & TV Presenter |
| Jennifer Saunders | Comedian |
| Tom Allen | Comedian |
The interviews combined celebrity conversations with Winkleman’s trademark humour and relaxed presenting style.
Audience Figures Were Solid but Below BBC’s Established Chat Show
The Claudia Winkleman Show generally attracted between 1.5 million and 2 million viewers per episode across combined viewing figures.
While those numbers were respectable for a new entertainment programme, they remained lower than The Graham Norton Show, which previously occupied the same Friday night BBC One slot.
Typical audience comparisons include:
| Programme | Average Audience |
|---|---|
| The Claudia Winkleman Show | 1.5–2 million viewers |
| The Graham Norton Show | 2.5–3 million viewers |
| Graham Norton’s New Year’s Special | Up to 4 million viewers |
In addition to traditional television audiences, clips from celebrity interviews continued to attract viewers across digital platforms and social media.
Critics Were Divided Over the New Format
The show’s reception was mixed.
Some reviewers praised Winkleman’s warmth, natural humour and entertaining conversations, describing the programme as lively and engaging.
Others, however, felt the format lacked structure, calling some episodes uneven and less compelling than other established British chat shows.
Despite the mixed reviews, the programme succeeded in attracting high-profile guests throughout its short run.
Graham Norton’s Schedule Opened the Door
The programme was produced by So Television, the production company co-founded by Graham Norton.
The series was able to launch after Norton reduced the number of annual episodes of his long-running chat show in recent years, leaving the traditional spring Friday-night slot available on BBC One.
That scheduling change created an opportunity for Winkleman’s own interview programme to debut.
BBC Respects Winkleman’s Decision
The BBC has expressed its appreciation for Winkleman’s work on the series and confirmed it fully supports her decision to step away.
BBC entertainment executives praised her warmth, humour and ability to connect with guests, while thanking both Winkleman and the production team for bringing the programme to viewers.
Although her chat show is ending, fans will not be waiting long to see her back on screen.
