Abia wins maiden South-East Scrabble Championship

Abia State won the inaugural South-East Open Scrabble Championship in Umuahia with 18 wins and 1 draw out of 22 games. Imo State finished third after winning 14 games, while Anambra State finished second with 16 victories and 1 draw.

The states of Enugu and Ebonyi missed out on podium spots, placing fourth and fifth, respectively. Abia State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development Nwaobilor Ananaba, represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Jane Igwe, declared the tournament concluded and praised Governor Alex Otti for enabling the state to host the competition.

The commissioner commended the players from the South-East states for maintaining concentration and acting in a disciplined manner.

Speaking as well, Abia State Director of Sports Obioma George congratulated the athletes for coming from their various states to participate in the competition and said that new stars have been found for Nigeria as a whole as well as the South-East states.

Chinedu Thorpe, the championship’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), urged young Nigerians to pursue careers in scrabble as a constructive outlet for their energies rather than turning to crime in an interview.
