A female police inspector, Mercy Bassey, has died after she was struck by a black Highlander SUV while carrying out route-lining duties in Lagos.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, as the police officer was reportedly deployed in connection with a presidential movement in the city.
According to reports, Bassey was struck around the Adekunle intersection on the Third Mainland Bridge while performing traffic-control duties.
The vehicle reportedly fled the scene after the collision, leaving the police officer seriously injured.
How the Accident Happened
Bassey was reportedly positioned along the route when the black Highlander SUV hit her.
The crash occurred at about 2:25 p.m., according to a police situation report cited in reports on the incident.
The vehicle did not stop after the collision.
Police officers reportedly attempted to pursue the vehicle, but the driver managed to escape.
The identity of the driver and the registration details of the vehicle were not immediately established.
The incident therefore quickly became both a fatal road accident investigation and a search for the driver of the vehicle.
Mercy Bassey Was Taken to Hospital
Following the collision, Bassey was rushed to General Hospital, Ebute Metta, for medical attention.
However, reports said she died while awaiting treatment.
Her remains were subsequently expected to be transferred to the Infectious Diseases Hospital Mortuary in Yaba for preservation.
The circumstances surrounding the accident and the subsequent medical treatment are now part of the wider investigation.
The police have reportedly commenced efforts to establish exactly how the crash happened and identify the vehicle and driver involved.
CCTV Could Help Identify the Driver
The Motor Traffic Division of the Lagos State Police Command is investigating the incident.
Investigators are also expected to obtain CCTV footage from the area, particularly footage around Control 5 at Adekunle.
Such footage could help investigators determine the vehicle’s movement immediately before and after the collision.
It could also provide information about the vehicle’s registration number and help identify the driver.
Witness accounts and physical evidence from the crash scene may also become important as investigators reconstruct what happened.
At the time of the reports, the driver had not been publicly identified.
Questions Around Route-Lining Duties
The death has also renewed attention on the dangers faced by police officers who are deployed for traffic control and route-lining duties during major movements.
Police officers involved in route security often have to operate close to moving vehicles, particularly when traffic is being controlled or temporarily restricted.
The incident demonstrates the risks involved in such assignments.
However, it would be premature to conclude that any particular agency or officer failed in its duties before the investigation is completed.
The key issue now is to establish the sequence of events, including where Bassey was positioned, what traffic instructions were in place and how the Highlander entered the area where she was working.
The Presidential Movement
The incident occurred on the same day President Bola Tinubu returned to Lagos from his European working vacation.
The President’s aircraft arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos after his return from Paris.
Reports said Bassey was performing route-lining duties in connection with a presidential movement.
That connection has increased public attention around the case because officers assigned to secure presidential routes are expected to work in a coordinated security environment.
The death of an officer during such an operation therefore raises important questions about road safety and operational procedures.
Investigation Expected to Continue
The police investigation will now focus on identifying the Highlander and determining who was driving it.
Investigators will also need to establish whether the driver was aware that the collision had occurred and why the vehicle allegedly continued without stopping.
CCTV footage, vehicle-registration information, eyewitness testimony and forensic examination of the accident scene could all help provide answers.
For now, the death of Inspector Mercy Bassey remains a tragic incident involving a police officer who was reportedly carrying out an official duty in Lagos.
Her family, colleagues and other members of the Nigeria Police Force are mourning her death, while investigators work to determine the full circumstances of the crash and locate the driver involved.
