Robert Blake Biography

Robert Blake was an American actor born as Michael James Gubitosi on September 18, 1933, in Nutley, New Jersey. He began acting when he was just six years old and kept it going for nearly sixty years. He started in short comedy films for kids and later became one of the faces of classic Hollywood.

He became famous for roles in Our Gang (also known as The Little Rascals), Red Ryder films, In Cold Blood (1967), and the hit TV show Baretta, where he played Detective Tony Baretta, a role that won him an Emmy Award.

But Blake’s story wasn’t all glamour. His life off the screen was often filled with chaos, from childhood abuse to drug struggles and finally a murder trial that became one of Hollywood’s biggest scandals.

Career

Robert Blake’s career started in the late 1930s when he played “Toto” in Bridal Suite (1939). Soon after, he became Mickey in the popular Our Gang comedy series, acting alongside his siblings from 1939 to 1944. Those roles made him one of the most recognized child stars in America at that time.

As a teenager, he appeared in films like Humoresque (1946), The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), and The Big Noise (1944). After serving in the military in the 1950s, he decided to improve his craft by studying acting seriously. That was when he dropped the name “Mickey Gubitosi” and became known as Robert Blake.

His comeback was strong. He started getting adult roles in both TV and film. He featured in popular shows like Men of Annapolis, The Californians, and Death Valley Days, where he played Billy the Kid.

Then came his breakout adult performance—playing Perry Smith, a real-life murderer, in In Cold Blood (1967). That movie changed everything for him, earning him praise from critics and proving he wasn’t just a child actor anymore.

In the 1970s, he starred in the crime drama Baretta, which became a huge hit. His line “Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time” became one of the most quoted TV lines of the decade. The show earned him an Emmy in 1975 and made him one of TV’s top names.

Even in his later years, Blake continued acting in serious roles, including Judgment Day: The John List Story (1993), where he played another real-life killer, and Lost Highway (1997), which turned out to be his final big movie role.

Net Worth

Blake made a lot of money from acting during his prime years, but things later went downhill. His legal battles and lifestyle drained his finances. In 2006, he filed for bankruptcy, claiming debts of about $3 million.

The state of California later put a lien on him for over $1 million in unpaid taxes. At the time of his death, his estimated net worth was around $1.1 million, a sad drop for a man who once lived at the top of Hollywood.

Family

Blake married actress Sondra Kerr in 1961. The marriage lasted over two decades, and they had two children together, Noah (born 1965) and Delinah (born 1966).

Years after their divorce, Blake met Bonnie Lee Bakley, a woman who was known for targeting wealthy older men. They had a daughter together, Rosie, born in 2000. However, there was confusion at first about who the father was since Bakley was also involved with Christian Brando, the son of actor Marlon Brando. A DNA test later confirmed Rosie was Blake’s child.

Blake and Bakley got married in November 2000, but their relationship was rocky from the start. Just a few months later, on May 4, 2001, Bonnie was found shot dead in her car outside a restaurant in Los Angeles.

Blake claimed he had left her in the car to go back inside and retrieve a gun he had forgotten, only to return and find her dead. Police didn’t believe his story, and in 2002, he was charged with her murder.

The trial dragged on for years and became a media circus. In 2005, he was acquitted of murder but later found liable in a civil case and ordered to pay $30 million in damages to Bakley’s family. The case destroyed his reputation and career for good.

In 2017, Blake remarried actress Pamela Hudak, but the marriage lasted only a year before they divorced.

Cause of Death

Robert Blake died on March 9, 2023, in Los Angeles, California. His family confirmed that he passed away from heart disease at the age of 89.

Despite all the controversy that surrounded his name, Blake left behind a remarkable film legacy that few child actors ever achieve. From his early comedy shorts to intense crime dramas, he built a career that defined multiple generations of Hollywood.

Final Thoughts

Robert Blake’s story is one of talent mixed with tragedy. He went from being a beloved child star to an award-winning actor, then to one of Hollywood’s most talked-about figures for all the wrong reasons.

Even with his flaws, his work in Baretta and In Cold Blood remains unforgettable. For those who grew up watching him, he was the kind of actor who gave everything to his roles — even when life behind the scenes was falling apart.—even
