“He was controlling and overly attached” — Tems opens up about past toxic relationship

The popular singer Tems has talked candidly about being in a bad relationship with a lover that was “obsessive and possessive.” The Essence crooner stated that the nature of the relationship went against her beliefs in an open conversation with media personality Angie Martinez, emphasising that she thinks a healthy relationship is about cooperation rather than ownership.

According to Tems, toxic relationships are exhausting since the toxic spouse may not even recognise their own toxicity.

“I’ve been in situations where I believed I was in love, but it really felt more like someone attempting to take possession of you. They believe they are your property. That is not love, either.

“Love is not fixation. Furthermore, it is not possession. I am not able to possess another human. Love is the unification of the two of you.

“We are each other; we don’t own each other. Everyone has, in my opinion, fallen in love with someone who is toxic without even realising it.

“They claim to love you, but they are unaware that they don’t. “You can’t love someone you feel like you own,” she said.
