Baba Fryo says Wizkid used comparisons with Fela as a promotional strategy

Veteran artist Baba Fryo has stated that it is now challenging to get a successful song, emphasising that most musicians are using antics to gain virality. In a recent episode of the I Say What I Say podcast, the seasoned musician asserted that the recent controversy over Wizkid’s comparison to the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was a ploy to promote his collaborative EP with Asake, “Real.”

“A huge hit these days requires a lot of work. Some even engage in some sort of stunt. They’re all stunts, like the one with “Wizkid pass Fela.”

Many musicians intentionally cause controversy in order to get people to stream their music. They’ve set the bar so high that now it takes a lot to get a hit’, he said.

According to Baba Fryo, getting a hit back then was simpler because it relied on the calibre of the song and real audience approval with little promotion.

He attributed the current delays in obtaining successful tunes to industry participants, including DJs, music executives, and musicians themselves. He claimed that certain DJs and music executives undermine trends by sabotaging good music.

The seasoned musicians advised Nigerian musicians and music executives to once again put quality music ahead of fads and virality on social media.
