The Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, has ordered the immediate cancellation of the 2026 Egungun Festival across Ogbomosoland following growing security concerns linked to violent incidents reported during the annual cultural celebration.
The decision comes after several reports of alleged attacks, intimidation, and other acts of lawlessness reportedly carried out by hoodlums during the festival, raising fears over public safety and the risk of escalating unrest.
The traditional festival, which commenced on July 8, was originally scheduled to conclude on July 19 before it was abruptly called off.
Palace Says Public Safety Comes First
The cancellation was announced in an official statement issued by the Palace Secretary, Mr. Toyin Ajamu, on behalf of the monarch.
According to the palace, intelligence and reports received during the festival indicated that some criminal elements had taken advantage of the celebrations to perpetrate violent acts, creating fear among residents and visitors.
The statement explained that the monarch considered the safety of lives and property a top priority, making the cancellation necessary to prevent further disturbances and maintain peace across Ogbomosoland.
The palace emphasized that the decision was not taken lightly but was considered essential to avoid any possible breakdown of law and order.
“The cancellation became imperative to forestall further disturbances and preserve the peace for which Ogbomosoland is known,” the statement noted.
Security Agencies Ordered to Enforce the Directive
Oba Ghandi Olaoye has directed all security agencies and law enforcement personnel to ensure strict compliance with the cancellation order.
Authorities have also been instructed to strengthen surveillance across communities within Ogbomosoland to prevent any further security breaches and ensure that peace is maintained throughout the area.
The palace urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security operatives, and continue to obey all lawful directives issued in the interest of public safety.
Residents Asked to Support Peace Efforts
While announcing the cancellation, the palace appealed to members of the public to avoid actions capable of disrupting public order.
Residents were assured that the decision was made solely to protect lives and property, with the hope that future editions of the Egungun Festival can be held under safer and more peaceful conditions.
