When you talk about the greatest actors of all time, Robert Duvall’s name belongs in that conversation without question. He didn’t chase fame. He chased craft. And over a career spanning more than 70 years, he built a body of work that includes some of the most iconic performances in American film history.
Robert Selden Duvall was born on January 5, 1931, in San Diego, California. His father, Rear Admiral William Howard Duvall, was a U.S. Navy officer, and his mother, Mildred Virginia Hart, was an amateur actress. He was the middle of three sons and grew up primarily in Annapolis, Maryland. His father pushed him toward a naval career, but his mother’s love of performance planted a different seed.
He attended Principia College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in drama in 1953, and then served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1954 as a private first class. After his service, he used the G.I. Bill to study at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City under Sanford Meisner.
During those years, he roomed with Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman while working odd jobs to survive — post office clerk, truck driver, and various other gigs that kept him afloat while he chased his dream.
His film debut came in 1962 when he played Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird. The role was small but unforgettable. From there, his career took off. He played Tom Hagen in The Godfather in 1972 and reprised the role in The Godfather Part II in 1974. He played Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore in Apocalypse Now in 1979, delivering one of the most quoted lines in cinema history: “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.”
He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1983 for his performance as Mac Sledge, a washed-up country singer, in Tender Mercies. He insisted on doing all his own singing and guitar playing in the film, and his authentic, raw performance earned him the Oscar. He received seven Oscar nominations over his career and won one, along with Golden Globes, Emmys, BAFTAs, and countless other honors.
His later work included Lonesome Dove in 1989, The Apostle in 1997 (which he wrote, directed, and starred in), Open Range in 2003, Get Low in 2010, Jack Reacher in 2012, and his final roles in Hustle in 2022 and The Pale Blue Eye in 2022.
Robert Duvall was married four times. His fourth and final marriage was to Luciana Pedraza, an Argentine actress and director 41 years younger than him. They met in 1997 in Argentina and married in 2005. They remained together until his death, living quietly on his 360-acre Byrnley Farm in Virginia. He had no biological children but was a stepfather to children from his first marriage.
On February 15, 2026, Robert Duvall passed away peacefully at his farm at the age of 95. His death brought tributes from across Hollywood, including Francis Ford Coppola, Al Pacino, and countless others who had worked with him over the decades.
