Tinubu Lawyers Challenge Release of FBI and DEA Records in US Court

Lawyers representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have challenged efforts to obtain and release records held by United States agencies in a case involving American transparency activist Aaron Greenspan.

Greenspan has pursued Freedom of Information Act litigation seeking documents connected to US government investigations involving Tinubu. His requests include FBI and DEA records relating to historical investigations.

Tinubu’s Legal Challenge

Tinubu’s legal team asked a US federal court to prevent the release of certain records and argued that privacy protections under US law apply to the materials.

Greenspan’s requests include records from the FBI, including interview records from 1992 and 1993, as well as other documents relating to historical investigations.

The legal challenge is being considered through the US federal court process and is focused on access to records held by American government agencies.

The proceedings are separate from Nigerian court proceedings and concern whether particular US government records can be released under applicable American laws and exemptions.

The case has attracted attention in Nigeria because of the political significance of the records being sought and the wider public discussion surrounding historical allegations involving the President.

However, allegations contained in a records request or legal filing should not be treated as proof that the underlying allegations have been established. The court proceedings concern the legal issues surrounding access to the government records.

Further developments will depend on subsequent filings and decisions by the US court.,
