Segun Sowunmi, convener of the Alternative Movement, has criticised Peter Obi’s 2027 presidential campaign, describing the former Anambra State governor as a “master of empty campaign.”
Sowunmi made the comments during a television discussion on Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race, where he was asked about the political strength of Obi and other opposition figures.
His criticism focused largely on what he described as a lack of sufficient detail in some of Obi’s campaign proposals, particularly issues relating to implementation, funding and timelines.
Sowunmi questioned how some of the policies being promoted by Obi would work in practice, including proposals around moving Nigeria from consumption to production.
He also discussed Obi’s appeal among voters, particularly the argument around political equity for the South-East, which has not produced a president in Nigeria’s current republic.
Sowunmi’s comments come as political activity begins to intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other opposition figures are increasingly positioning themselves ahead of the election, while President Bola Tinubu and his political allies are also preparing for the next electoral cycle.
The remarks by Sowunmi have added another layer to the political debate around Obi’s campaign, particularly the question of whether opposition candidates have provided sufficient detail about how their proposed policies would be funded and implemented.
Obi had yet to directly respond to Sowunmi’s latest comments at the time of the reports.
The description of Obi as a “master of empty campaign” is Sowunmi’s characterisation rather than an established fact. His remarks have nevertheless attracted attention because they come at a time when political actors are increasingly scrutinising the policy platforms of the major candidates ahead of 2027.
